Safety & Code Of Conduct
Safety is our top priority at the Barrington Bicycle Club, and we want to ensure that everyone is aware of key safety practices while riding.
BBC Safety Tips
-
No earbuds/headphones: Please do not use earbuds or headphones during club rides.
-
Avoid aero bars in groups: Do not drop into your aero bars when riding in a group or pace line.
-
Communication: Use verbal communication and hand signals. The more we talk, the safer we are as a group. Call out debris in the road and communicate upcoming turns.
-
Stay right: Always ride to the right of the road. Do not pass on the right of another cyclist, as this is our safety zone. In Barrington Hills, we must ride in single file.
-
Notify ride leaders: If you plan to turn off early or take a different route, please inform the ride leader or communicate with another rider to relay the message.
-
Courtesy to fellow riders: If you need to snot rocket or spit, please move to the back to do so.
-
Respond to “Car Back”: If back riders yell “Car Back” look and safely move into single file to avoid aggravating drivers.
-
Communication is key: Riders in the back can’t see what’s ahead, so it’s crucial to communicate with those behind you to avoid breaking up the group or leaving someone behind.
-
Clear communication at intersections: When crossing intersections, say only “CLEAR” or “STOP.” Avoid confusing terms that may lead to accidents.
-
New riders: If you are new to our club or group rides, let us know. Staying towards the back initially may help you learn group behavior.
-
Practice safe group riding: Everyone’s experience varies, from seasoned racers to new riders. Let’s nurture new riders and ensure everyone feels welcome at BBC.
-
Wear a helmet: Always protect yourself.
-
Do not ride against traffic: Always ride with traffic and avoid sidewalks when possible.
-
Obey traffic laws: Stop for all stop signs and red lights and follow lane markings.
-
Be predictable: Ride in a straight line and signal your actions.
-
Maintain space: Allow enough room to avoid hazards and other cyclists. NO OVERLAPPING WHEELS
-
Use lights: Always have lights on your bike at night and during the day for visibility.
Stay Alert and Ride SMART
-
Stay alert: Momentary inattention is a leading cause of incidents. Watch for vehicles, pedestrians, and hazards.
-
Maintain space: Keep a safe distance from other riders and obstacles.
-
Act safely and predictably: Be courteous and visible.
-
Respect the Rules of the Road: Obey traffic laws and yield the right of way when necessary.
-
Think ahead and communicate: Anticipate actions of others and communicate your own.
-
Use of club-provided GPS routes are shared on a best-effort basis and may contain errors; and does not replace rider awareness, judgment, or responsibility for safe operation.
